things i did this summer
Since I moved to Brighton 4 years ago, I have been wanting to learn and develop specific hobbies.
- hand drumming
- dinghy sailing, and
- open canoeing
hand drumming, well, the first one should have been easy considering I have a djembe already, and I have never played it in a group. considering how many workshops there are in Brighton we are lucky to have the skills and talent in Brighton, however the days/dates always seemed to clash.. finally tonight I have been to my first class > west african hand drumming by Batafon Arts.. fantastic, and i can still use my hands to type after nearly two and a half hours.. in the beautiful unitarian church.
dinghy sailing, still never been considering we have friends who sail, went out once with them from Brighton Marina and it was a lovely evening, very calm so didnt really learn anything technical, which I like. yes, and went sailing on a 35ft yacht around parts of the Isle of Wight.. very relaxing, apart from Southampton water which is not when you have the fast ferry driving straight at you. something for 2007 I feel.
open canoeing, as a BCU coach I’ve had a good innings of this in 2006. Ive paddled the River Wye with school groups and co-led expeditions down the Thames in Berks/Oxon.
I attended a Sunday paddle down at the Adur Canoe Club, and met some lovely people. I had paddled with some of them before on the Rother Tour. The latest meet was great day, and looking forward to paddling some tours, rallys with them soon.
There is certainly a lot to do down in Sunny Sussex, it’s just finding the time thats the hard bit, days clashing, weekends booked up elsewhere and work committments.
As a freelancer ive so far enjoyed the flexibility of being able to head up to the downs for a walk, and making it down to the beach for the sunset, however, I look forward to taking on more club activities and meeting more like minded people in the local area.
