Freelance Work Aspirations for 2007

Wednesday, January 3rd, 2007

A fresh start to an exciting year, I’m really excited about getting involved with new projects and clients in 2007.

I also have made a list of what I aim to do for the first part of the new year:

  1. Write more articles – for related magazines – creative match, .net, etc.
  2. Keep up with the networking > events, conferences and local meetups.
  3. Increase freelance work in Brighton
  4. Get local deskspace in a office in Brighton (or Hove, actually)
  5. Extracurricular activity: Sailing and jogging Brighton

I like making these lists whatever stage I am in my life, its a good way to set goals and also look back to see how successfull you have been.

The GTD (Getting Things Done) wikipedia resource should be useful further reading to creating a successfull day to day working life.

Or a new article on Yahoo – Five Principles for Happiness in 2007

How do I optimize Flash code for SEO?

Wednesday, December 13th, 2006

There are two major ways to improve your flash code for SEO purposes:

  1. Add descriptive metadata to the Flash presentation.

Although metadata might not be as important as a couple of years ago, skipping it for Flash sites is not recommended.

  2. Provide alternative pages that describe the contents of the Flash presentation.

If your site uses more than just a flash advert, or rollover effect, you should consider using alternative html pages. This is not only because they are text that can be indexed by search engines, but also because there are users who might not be willing to see the Flash movie.

Agencies for Freelance web designers and developers

Tuesday, November 14th, 2006

When I first started freelancing in the UK, I found it hard to figure out which recruitment agencies I should be approaching.

It can be a lot of time wasted if you spend your time approaching the wrong agencies rather than working for a client and getting paid. My saying and maybe a lot of other people – “it’s a full time job, getting a job!”.

Giant Halfway – Bike for life (and commuting)

Wednesday, November 1st, 2006

Living in Brighton, my work takes me to London around 3-4 months a year. As a freelancer im always looking for freedom in travel and getting from A to B in the most efficient way without compromising the environment.
So when southern railways introduced their ban on bicycles across their network last year I, probably as well as others started looking for alternatives to this. The only way to take bikes on the train is to have folding versions. Expensive, it took a bit of time to get used to paying up to £500 for a bike.

Eliminate all judgments

Wednesday, September 20th, 2006

Judgmental people are usually easy to spot because they are the ones eating alone in the lunch room. They think of themselves as to have lunch with those guys in shipping and to eat with the guys in IT. No one is above you and no one is below you. We are all mammals – humans, more distinctly – just trying to get by the best way we know how.
